Introduction: Why I Chose The Social Work of Museums

Hello everyone.  I am Gessica M., a first year masters student at IUPUI in the museum studies program.  I chose to read Silverman’s book because it focuses on the museum as a place for people and communities.  Museums today have many challenges to remain connected to the communities that they are apart of.  Putting the museum into the center of a community though social work seems ideal, but also seems challenging.  I am very interested in reading about how Silverman sees the challenge of social work being met by museums.

I am looking forward to reading The Social Work of Museums and having conversations with my group members and other museum professionals about what we will discover over the next few months!
